Rating : - A Converted Skeptic
When I first heard about the Kindle and it's electronic reader brethren, I was really skeptical. I love books, and I could not imagine why anyone would want to trade that experience in for something electronic and sterile. Eventually, though, I became curious about the Kindle for three reasons:
1. I'm running out of shelving space for books.
2. I'm finding most of my books these days are around the 500-700 page range, and as weak as this sound, holding them up for extended periods of reading was hurting my hands and wrists.
3. I hate hard covers (see reason 2), and I hate waiting for paperback versions of books I want to read.

Still, I wasn't sure if I wanted one or if I would go with the Kindle or another reader. I did a lot of research, and after several days of using it, I'm so glad I went with the Kindle. It's not perfect; comments about the title organization are correct, and I've found already that I'm not noticing things like the book's glossary. Still, this product delivers. After less than an hour, I forgot about the toy aspect of my Kindle and was focused in on the book aspect. It's easier to use than a book in many ways as I don't have to worry about losing my page, and I can turn the page with a touch of a button, which is nice when using a book light (though I am going to get a taller one as there is a bit of glare). The built in dictionary is a great feature, and being able to look things up when I'm away from my computer is an advantage as I read a lot of historical fiction and like to look up things but often forget to by the time I get to my computer.

It isn't quite the same as having a book, but I'm surprised by how little I miss the paper text so far. I'm sure I will still read paper books as not every title is available yet on Kindle, but I really appreciate being able to carry so many texts in such a small package and being able to instantly have a book. The additional features work nicely for the most part too, but what I like most about this is that it really is quite similar in feel to reading a book. I was worried about reading from a screen because I find it impossible to read things with any length from my computer, but it doesn't feel like that. In fact, I can see better because I can increase the text size, so it's not a big deal if my glasses aren't handy when my eyes start to bother me.

Overall, I'm just really happy with this product. I'm not an early adopter who buys something just because it's new, and while I enjoy tech toys, they have to be something I need and will use for me to invest in them. The Kindle definitely meets my needs and I will be happily using it in the future. This is an electronic product, but it really is for book lovers more than techies.
